Small or Large Scorpion Pendant? Compare Scale, Weight and Raised Detail

Compare two sculpted silver scorpions: a compact pendant at about 7 g and a larger, more open design at about 18 g. See how their shape, listed dimensions and chain openings differ.

Choose the small scorpion for a compact, tightly curled silhouette, listed at approximately 22 × 30 mm and 7 g. Choose the large scorpion for a more extended outline with open claws and separated legs, listed at approximately 31 × 45 mm and 18 g. Both are sculpted in three dimensions; compare their shape, listed size and weight to decide which you prefer.

A compact body with a tightly curled tail

The small pendant’s front, side and reverse photos show a raised, rounded form: a short segmented body, smooth curved pincers that taper to points, bent legs gathered close to the torso, and a segmented tail curled tightly up and forward. The chain loop sits behind the upper tail and body rather than standing above the head.

Its most distinctive feature is the tightly curled tail. Seen from the side, that curve rises above the short body, giving the compact silhouette depth.

An elongated body with an open outline

The larger design has an elongated body, legs reaching outward, and broad, rounded claws that taper toward their tips. The tail arches high through the profile, and from the front it runs as a long central line down the length of the piece. The reverse shows a recessed underside with the loop attached at the top. Gothicrock describes it as a single-piece casting rather than a body with soldered-on legs.

Reading the numbers carefully

Both listings give sizes in millimetres, and both are approximate. The small listing does not say which figure is width and which is height, or whether the bail is included. The large listing says its size is measured claw to tail but does not state whether the bail is counted either. Because the two measurements may not share the same basis, they are a guide to overall scale rather than a precise like-for-like comparison.

Weight is more straightforward. The listed pendant weights differ by about 11 g: 18 g compared with 7 g. That is a listed catalog difference, not a wear test, and neither listing states a thickness or depth figure.

Choosing by shape

When the compact scorpion makes sense

The small pendant suits you if you want the motif present but contained. Its curled tail and gathered legs keep the outline close and rounded, and it sits as a modest focal point at an open collar or against a plain tee. It is also the clearer choice if you prefer to keep a pendant's listed weight low.

When the larger outline makes sense

The large pendant suits you if the silhouette itself is the point: legs splayed, claws open, tail raised as if mid-strike. The spread of the legs and claws is part of its overall shape, so inspect the side views as well as the front. Gothicrock's own listing notes that the open claws and extended legs can catch loose knits, and suggests tucking the pendant before pulling clothing over it and not deliberately bending the limbs.

Before you choose a chain

Plan the chain separately. The large pendant is sold without one; neither pendant includes a complimentary leather necklace or cord. The large listing gives a 6 mm bail figure, but it does not say which direction that measures or what the clearance is inside the opening, so treat it as a starting point rather than a guarantee that a particular chain will pass through. The small listing gives no bail measurement. Before ordering a chain separately, compare its end fittings with the opening using our pendant and chain fit guide, and ask us for a measurement if you need one.

Make your choice

If you picture a small, tightly coiled scorpion, the compact pendant is your match. If you picture claws and legs reaching outward, go large.
