Bat Wings, Whole Bat or Vampire Skull? Choose the Motif and Format

Decide what sits at the center of the design (the whole bat, the wings alone, a heart or a fanged skull), then choose whether a pendant, ring or pair of studs carries it.

To choose bat jewelry, start with the center of the design. If you want the whole animal, with body, head and spread wings, look at a whole-bat pendant or ring. If the wing shape alone is enough, wing studs keep the motif to its outline. If you want wings framing something else, choose between a winged heart and a fanged skull. Then pick the format. A pendant puts the motif at the neckline, a ring puts it on the hand, and a pair of studs puts it at the ears.

These four groupings are a practical way to compare the six designs below. They are not a fixed system of bat symbolism, and many designs combine elements. Use them as a shortcut to work out which shape you are drawn to.

The whole bat: body, head and wings together

A whole-bat design makes the animal the subject. Our Vampire Bat & Crescent Moon pendant spreads an oxidized sterling silver bat's textured wings around a crescent moon made of brass with 14K gold plating. The main thing to consider is the two-tone contrast: the bat reads in darkened silver and the moon in warm gold. The listing gives a size of 1.5 × 1.9 inches (approximately 3.81 × 4.83 cm) and an approximate weight of 15 g. A .925 hallmark is on the reverse.

The Three-Dimensional Bat ring puts the same idea on the hand. Its bat is raised from the face rather than flat, and darkened folds give the wings depth from the front and the side. The face measures 1 × 0.8 inch (approximately 25.4 × 20.3 mm), and the ring weighs approximately 16 g. Hold those figures against a ring you already own to judge how much of the finger the motif will cover.

Wings only, or wings around a heart

Wing-only studs keep the outline and leave out the body. The red and black pairs below make the same motif decision. Compare the stone color, its position and the shape of the silver around it.

On the Red CZ pair, each wing curves around a round red cubic zirconia held in a four-prong setting, with polished ribs outlining darkened silver membranes. Each earring measures approximately 5/8 × 5/16 inch (1.59 × 0.79 cm), and they fasten with stud posts and friction clutches. On the Black CZ pair, a small black cubic zirconia anchors the narrow end of each wing, and the wing has raised contours and scalloped lower edges. Each earring is listed at approximately 16 × 8 mm, with stud posts and push-on backs. Both are sold as a mirrored left-and-right pair with backs, and both are listed at approximately 2.6 g per pair.

The Diamond Heart Bat Wing ring uses spread wings as a frame instead. A heart-shaped center stone, which the listing identifies as a diamond, sits between them, and a small cross rises above the heart. The wing texture continues across the shoulders. That gives you three elements to read, where the whole-bat ring has a single animal. The ring face is stated as 10 × 18 mm, with a listed silver weight of 10 g.

The hybrid: a fanged skull between bat wings

The Bat-Wing Vampire Skull pendant combines two motifs. A fanged skull sits between spread bat wings, and a smaller skull forms the bail above the main face. Oxidized recesses pick out the teeth, eye sockets and wing structure against polished silver. It measures approximately 58 × 32 mm and weighs approximately 16 g. Choose it if you want the skull as the focal point with the wings extending its outline. Choose the whole-bat pendant if you want the animal itself at the center.

Read each size and quantity carefully

Compare in one unit. Some listings use inches and others use millimeters. The two wing studs come out at almost the same outline once you convert, so use the stone color, its position and the wing contours to distinguish them rather than expecting a large size difference.

Earring sizes are per earring, weights are per pair. Each stud measurement describes one earring. The 2.6 g figure covers the whole pair.

Ring face size is not ring size. A face measurement tells you how large the motif looks, and your US size describes the fit around the finger. The heart ring's 10 g is stated as silver weight. Our guide to gothic ring styles explains how to check face, profile and finger size separately.

Pendants arrive without a chain. Both pendants are sold on their own. Choose a compatible chain or cord that fits the bail, especially the sculpted skull bail on the vampire skull pendant.

If you are weighing small wing studs against other compact earrings, skull studs vs hoop drops shows how to read face size against overall length.

Choose the center, then the format

Decide first whether you want the whole bat, the wings alone, a winged heart or a fanged skull. Then choose the neckline, the hand or the ears.
